They backed Zamorar here and he started in the red. He seems to be a horse with a pretty big rap on him but I don’t think he will live right up to those expectations. He jumped and led as expected and although headed, managed to get the bob in on the line. Platelet bounced right back and showed she is an 1100m horse. She is better on top of the ground so her effort was very good.
Worth noting: Wait for Platelet on dead or better over 1100 and bet with lots of confidence.
Race 2. 1200M The Chase Hotel Handicap

Moody runner Clinton Affair was having his second start. He won well at Donald and wasn’t far behind the RB62 on relative times that day. He looked to come right on here and was given every chance with a gem of a ride on the speed from Meech. Looks a horse that can continue to improve. Magnier did well to run into second, I felt he would really need to improve between runs and he did. Haussmann got out late in the betting and ran into third.
Worth noting: Clinton Affair was a class above so you can follow him and Magnier looks like he is still learning. He is well bred and should be respected.
Race 3. 2400M Aldgate Lawyers Handicap

FINIGUERRA CRAIG NEWITT 3rd $4EF
Newitt rode a really good race and started to pull away from them up front and set up a nice lead. He looked really strong and had a nice break and for a while we were thinking how far? While this was happening the other horses looked to be off the bit and chasing hard with Hurdy Gurdy Man and Montgomery the ones making the best ground. Newitt was just unable to keep Finiguerra going as the horses run came to an end and Montgomery just has a little better turn of foot than Hurdy Gurdy Man who is more of a grinder. Montgomery got the job done well.
Worth noting: Always hard to pin a horse in these types of races.
Race 4. 1000M PFD Food Services Handicap

Good speed early with Galbraith kicking hard along the fence and holding out Queen Delight who worked to hard early and ran last. Alpha Proxima did really well to win this race albeit narrowly. He goes really well for Oliver and hasn’t been going too bad. Johannapine was a hard luck story. She got caught in behind horses in the straight and was unable to get a real crack until late. She was unlucky first up last time also. Before the race the trainer of Johannapine stated that she hadn’t done a great deal of work so we can expect her to come on next time.
Worth noting: Follow Johannapine, she is a winner and on the up
Race 5. 1100M ALH Group Plate
SOFT SAND DAMIEN OLIVER 1st $1.75F
RUE MAPLE DAMIAN LANE 2nd $5.50
SPURCIFIC BEN KNOBEL 3rd $17
Soft Sand didn’t get out all that well but she certainly finished well. She was a class above them and loomed up and passed them comfortably. She is a pretty exciting filly and certainly has lots of upside. If they can get her right out of the gates and she can sit a little closer and still have that turn of foot she will be winning lots of very good races. Rue Maple is as honest as they come and she raced really well but just doesn’t have the class the winner does. Spurcific looks like she is just about back to her best.
Worth noting: Spurcific is very good on her day and handles the wet, well worth following.
Race 6. 1600M Jimjoca Cup

TWO SUGARS BEN MELHAM 3rd $8.50
Really messy race this one. Shihabi for Moody was the winner and she was coming off a good performance at Echuca when winning. She has come on from that but the form through the race is good, the third horse from the Echuca race Mr Hong Kong will run at Wodonga today. Tai Tai Tess was ridden closer and she ran OK, I still think she is much better at 1200/1400. Ominous Quality had no luck and was pushed well back in the field, she can be forgiven for that.
Worth noting: Really need to make sure you put a line through this run of Ominous Quality.
Race 7. 1400M Catanach’s Jewellers Handicap

Text book ride from Jake Duffy on Club Command. He got the Moody runner to the front and that is where he was able to stay throughout. Approaching the turn Newitt got off his back on Roses In The Glen and looked like he was going to go straight past the winner but she just died on her run and Duffy rated the winner so well out in front that he had another kick. Randall improved and has probably found his right grade.
Worth noting: Always liked Roses in The Glen, she is going to be ready next time and needs to be followed.
Race 8. 1600M Court Jester Hotel & Junction Hotel Handicap

LETHAL ARROW DANIEL STACKHOUSE 3rd $16
Shenzhou Steeds was all the rage here and he ended up close to even money. He was given a great ride by Newitt but once they got to the turn it was clear that he wasn’t happy and he was unable to finish off. Newitt later reported the horse didnt appreciate being tight in between horses but that means nothing to the punters that backed him heavily. Cosmic Causeway was given a gem of a ride to end up where he did by Symons. His win in Adelaide was good and he backed it up with a good win here.
Worth noting: Wait for Shenzhou Steeds to get back to Flemington over 1600 and get your money back, big track the key.
2nd Famous Seamus Robyn Freeman-Key
3rd Conroy’s Gap Adam Hyeronimus
Conroy’s Gap was the best to begin in the first whilst Air Comet and Malavio came out slightly behind the rest. When they settled, Flying Zero had found the fence, with Famous Seamus pressuring it on the outside. Conroy’s Gap settled third on the fence with Sherwood one out and one back. After they turned, Malavio which was well in the market was in under a tonne of pressure out the back with Air Comet being the only one coming from behind that looked like making a bid for victory. It claimed the lead at the 100m and went on to win it. All in all a pretty average affair and nothing to follow.

1st Destruction Glyn Schofield
2nd Kabayan Tom Berry
3rd Queen’s Elect Chad Schofield
The two-year-olds took a while to sort themselves out with Kabayan six wide early, before eventually ending up three deep. Santa Fe Son ended up leading clearly, with Destruction getting a lovely run just off the pace. In the run to the line Destruction was superior despite racing greenly, as did Kabayan. Based on the tough run Kabayan had and the easy run Destruction received in transit, the first two were the equal of each other and are clearly the ones to follow out of this race.

1st Scream Machine Adam Hyeronimus
2nd Fortunefivehundred Robert Thompson
3rd Lucripetous Glyn Schofield
A good start from the 2000m here. Rockafellacentre pulled its way to the lead over Fortunefivehundred and Tyson’s Tiger. The eventual winner Scream Machine was getting a lovely run about 4 lengths off the lead on the fence. There was a mid race move from Glyn Schofield on Lucripetous but it didn’t pay off for him as he ended up stuck very wide. Just before the turn, Rockafellacentre hung off the fence and the jockey on Fortunefivehundred decided to go for home. It put up a decent break on them, but it was still a long way from home. Whilst all this went on, Scream Machine was literally doing nothing and when asked for his effort in the straight, was too good for them. The effort of Lucripetous to run a closing third after taking off early was excellent. Eliza Blues and Burnout worked home ok.

1st Gai’s Choice Peter Robl

3rd Brookton Tiara Glyn Schofield
An absolute one act affair in the end with Gai’s Choice bolting in and looking very impressive. Titbit missed the kick here, where as Freetoair began very quickly to lead. Star Salute found the spot outside the leader and Brookton Tiara had a cushy run on the fence in third. Gai’s Choice looked to be a long way back on the turn but when the run came in the straight she went bang. She’s clearly a mare in form and worth following again. Titbit finished off best of the rest after missing the start and is worth another chance. Not much to say about the rest.

1st Rain Drum Tom Berry
2nd Kim Warrior Peter Robl
3rd Shamardani Chad Schofield
Again from the 2000m a good start with the exception of Mr Pedantic that missed it about 8 lengths. Rain Drum worked across to lead and after that it was a well rated ride in front to get home. Moriarty sat outside the lead and not much changed throughout the race. At the 600m the leader had them stacked up with anything that was making ground having to come very wide. At the 300m they all started to drop off with the exception of Kim Warrior that looked to make the finish interesting. Soon after that however, Rain Drum kicked as expected and had the race won. The one that goes into the sack book from here is Moriarty. I forgave it on the wet track last start but there was no excuse today. Not even the Waller magic can get this one going it seems.

1st Tromso Chad Schofield
2nd Hurrara Kathy O’Hara
3rd Girls Go Racing Blake Spriggs
As excpect Hurrara showed any amount of speed, crossing Jest Crewsin‘. Recorrido as it can do, missed the kick. Nothing Like Luca crossed over the second outside the leader. Hurrara is a very genuine horse, particularly around Rosehill and when he kicked at the 250m, I thought I was a genius for backing yet another Rosehill leader/winner, however Tromso had other ideas. He had been getting a good run back on the fence well back off the strong pace. It picked up Hurarra literally in the shadows of the post. Girls Go Racing was the other to fly from the back but was entitled to do so. Falzzon and Youthful Jack worked home at the end but both were disappointing in my opinion. Recorrido has to be sacked after its poor barrier manners yet again and didn’t run on either.

See The World missed the start about a length here, which adds more merit to its win. Turf Hero seemed to be ridden with intent to lead and did that. Bello came across from out wide to be outside the leader. Kirinata got stuck wide in the run on the speed. When they turned for home, Chris Reith on See The World must have known he was bolting as he was not risking staying towards the inside and found his way to the outside and the horse really pinged to the line. Embark on the other hand stayed towards in the inside and finished off well but could not match the winner. Mr Bollinger went fairly well after taking off early and wide. Kirinata was not bad after its wide run. Turf Hero stopped pretty badly late in the piece and goes into the sack book.

1st Palasport Blake Spriggs
2nd Samui Lad Nathan Berry
3rd Madibagold Jessie Whipp
Pontiana found support in betting and drove through to lead here. The pace was pretty strong however with Glintz ridden up to take it on in the lead. They strung out over a fair bit of ground indicating the pace was fairly strong. Glintz was under the stick and gone on the turn, with Samui Lad the first challenger to Pontiana. They pretty much queued up for victory at the 200m here and in a blanket finish it was Palasport at big odds taking inside runs for victory. The effort of Samui Lad was probably one of the best of the race as he was wide most of the way, hit the front early in the straight and kept going ok for second. Pontiana stopped badly and Erewhon also did little. Both of these could only be taken on trust next time.

Specials from the Rosehill meeting: Kabayan, Lucripetous, Gai’s Choice, See The World
The Brisbane Winter Carnival thus far has been packed full of quality racing and Doomben 10,000 day was no exception with a number of quality performances.
The first couple of races, realistically looked very tough on paper and virtually panned out that way. I didn’t find anything much to note in the first but in the second it is worth noting that the winner Volkhere, sat outside the lead the whole way and won fairly impressively.
Race 3 saw Hoss Amor sent out a short priced favourite for the second time in as many runs and it had every possible chance. The winner, Boban, came with a Bernborough like run down the outside and taking it on face vaule you would have to say there is more in store.
Another lottery in race 4, with Raise Up getting the cash, in what was a great ride from Kerrin McEvoy that made the difference. Dusty Gold was getting to the line very well here and could be worth following at about this level.
The Grand Prix Stakes was the 5th event and you would have to say it was the win of the day. Brambles took up the running and cleared out to a big lead before the turn. Many may have thought he would stop but half way down the straight it was apparent this wasn’t going to happen and he now appears to have The Derby at his mercy.
The flop of the day occurred in race 6, where Wazn was sent out favourite. I thought he would be one of the best bets of the day based on his two lead up runs. Before the turn he appeared to travel into the race well, but I could find no excuse for his poor effort in the straight – perhaps the vet may have more luck explaining that one? Fantastic Blue got the cash at huge odds in the race whilst the second and third placed runners, Dance With Her and Ironstein ran consistent races again and will no doubt be chances in The Brisbane Cup.
The main event was The Ten Thousand and many will tell you we’ve seen a star on the rise in the form of Sea Siren. I can’t argue that she’s all quality but I also note she had the run of the race here and the weight advantage. The effort of Buffering was just as good I thought. Again with a weight advantage however, Sea Siren will have to go close in The Stradbroke.
In the last, Excellantes looked the bet of the card for mine as he was always going to find the front. Coming around the turn, I thought it was a very good ride by James McDonald not to get too excited about going for home too soon. He waited 100m and then let it rip, which was the key to holding off Seek And Find and Rocker, which both ran well. Gundy Son might find an easier race it can win soon.
