Weekend Racing Reviews Saturday 1st September

Race 1.     1400M    Metro Solar Handicap   

Good win by Bloomingdale Miss who was able to get to the front and stay there.  It was her first start on a dry track and she was 1100 out to 1400 so it was an excellent all round effort. Walk With Attitude was good to finish second, came through the strong Awesome Bro Maiden at Swan Hill before winning at Geelong. Mareeza was the Moody/Nolen runner who was unable to go on with it.

Worth noting: Like the second horse Walk With Attitude, coming along nicely.

Race 2.     1400M    Hocking Stuart Handicap   

Let’s Be Happy really looked to relish getting back on the firm track and was given a gem of a ride by Nikolic. He peeled out at the right time on her and she was just too good for them. Good effort from Biancon Rose, she was coming off of a heavy 10 first up run and should be ready next start. Big fan of Spirit Song and her effort was good enough going forward also. Will be following her pretty closely and hoping she finds herself in the right races.

Worth noting:  Pretty decent bunch of mares, would expect most of these have a win in them sooner rather than later, race placement the key.

Race 3.     1000M    Sportingbet Sprint Series Heat 1   

New runner to the Moody yard got the money here. He continues to improve horses and she came down from Darwin and killed this field.  Thought Flash Of Doubt was excellent, probably better knock as a midweek heavy tracker but may have a little more upside. Sharnee Rose was around the mark again but just unable to win here will enjoy more ground. Celebrity Girl was always in trouble once she couldn’t cross with the big weight.

Worth noting: Celebrity Girl is very good, expect she will have a good Spring

Race 4.     1200M    H.D.F. McNeil Stakes   

The run of Elite Elle came to an end here after she was backed off the map to make it five in a row. Good win byLady Of Harrods, she is a good example of how hard it is at times when horses going from heavy back to firm as she was beaten 14.2L only two weeks prior by Elite Elle. The Waterhouse runner Kabayan did well and hit the line strong and Shamexpress has come back in good order.

Worth noting: Shamexpress looks a nice one to follow going forward.

Race 5.     1100M    TheShark.com.au Stakes   

Golden Archer was heavily backed and didn’t let his followers down. Worked himself into the lead and was given a gem of a ride by Nolen before just being too good to the line. He is much better suited on top of the ground. Mr Make Believe was another big run from the Moody stable. Horse must be going very well to go like this fresh.Platelet was three wide the trip and her effort to finish in third was excellent.

Worth noting: Should be prominent in the Spring Golden Archer, not sure how good he is yet but Moody will place him well.

Race 6.     1400M    New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes   

Excellent return by Sincero. We know how good he is and he resumed and showed us that he is in for a great campaign. Rodd got him off at the right time and he showed us how big and strong he was down to the line.Happy Trails is a great horse. He didn’t look suited here at WFA but his effort was excellent. Around a mile on a firm track is his best go. Thought Green Moon was good also, resumed last prep at 1600 and won very well, looking forward to seeing him next start over a mile.

Worth noting: Big follow on Green Moon.

Race 7.     1700M    Slickpix Stakes   

Looked a hard race on paper and played out that way. Good win by Cuban Sunday. He didn’t have a great deal of luck at Flemington the start prior but it was a pretty ordinary race all the same. He appreciated the firm track. Ebony Rock has been up since November last year and he was hitting the line well. Streets Away looked to be the winner at one stage early but hit the front too soon, still thought his effort to hold on for third was excellent. Avienus, Mr Ocierin and Sabrage did well also.

Worth noting: No big follows coming out of this race, prefer to see what they do next time.

Race 8.     1400M    National Jockeys’ Celebration Day Plate   

 Speed map was out the window early here with Spacecraft leading and Chase The Rainbow box seating. Excellent return to racing by Chase The Rainbow, he thrashed them and like the way he was abel to take a sit. He has a very strong turn of foot. Dusty Star just couldn’t get to the lead after Spacecraft jumped so well. He fought on well but it just didn’t work out for him. Blinkers and dry track did the job for Spacecraft, his best is pretty good.

Worth noting: Big follow on the winner Chase The Rainbow

Race 1

1st       New Beginning        Chris Reith
2nd       Westchester              Kerrin McEvoy
3rd       Natch Catch                Brendan Ward

Nocturnelle was slow at the start but ended up behind the leader on the fence after a few hundred metres.  Craiglea Tina led them up from Flinders city.  They all stayed in their order until they turned for home.  The eventual winner, New Beginning was well back, but travelling very nicely, and was widest runner on the turn.  He sprinted very well to claim the lead, and Westchester was left to do the chasing down the outside but all to no avail.

Race 2

1st       Prosir                        Nash Rawiller
2nd       Norzita                     Corey Brown
3rd       Chez Harmony        Jason Collett

Prosir was an odds on favourite here, and had the outside gate, but that didn’t stop him crossing over to lead by the time they got to the first turn.  He basically led them a merry dance in front, but wanted to hang a little bit on the turn.  Rawiller gave him 2 with the whip to get his mind on the job and he quickly gapped them and it was all over.  Norzita and Chez Harmony did well to come from a long way back to run into second and third, but were no match for the winner who looks a smart one.

Race 3 

1st       Coup Ay Tee           Hugh Bowman
2nd       Flaming Rock       Jason Collett
3rd       Madiba Gold            Nathan Berry

Prince Braeman began quickly here but Riomoral kicked up inside of it to find the lead.  Prince Pedro was allowed a very nice run in third behind the leaders.  Hardbreak Hotel was sent out favourite off the strenght of its last start win, and settled about sixth on the fence but couldn’t find its form today.  Coup Ay Tee settled well back and was allowed to start to stride around them before the turn, he hit the front in the straight and then held off  Flaming Rock and Madibagold, in what was a pretty strong win.  Craiglea Falcon got home nicely down the outside.

Race 4

1st       Thumbtacks                   Jason Collett
2nd       Soledad                           Kerrin McEvoy
3rd       Gangster’s Choice        Glyn Schofield

Soledad found the front here, with Adnocon being ridder closer today, moving to second outside the lead and Voice Commander finding the spot on the fence behind the leader.  This left Thumbtacks in a nice one out one back trail.  They seemed to slow up midrace, so Gangster’s Choice which had been wide all the way strode up towards the front.  In the straight, Gangster’s Choice kept trying but the wide run told, where as the nice runThumbtacks had in transit allowed it to get a narrow victory.  I wouldn’t write off Spinnawitch on this failure as I don’t think the way the race was run really suited her.

Race 5

1st       Pierro                 Nash Rawiller
2nd       Your Song       Peter Robl
3rd       Epaulette         Kerrin McEvoy

Ashokan led at what looked like only an average pace, with the unbeaten Slipper winner Pierro sitting outside the leader.  All Too Hard, Pierro’s main rival in betting was a couple of lengths behind him getting what seemed a nice run.  As they turned for home, Pierro looked to be traveling big time, where as the jockey on All Too Hard was getting a little anxious.  In the straight, Pierro was never going to get beaten, and All Too Hard labored a bit and missed the place.  He will probably appreciate races with more pace on.  Your Song made good use of its nice run throughout the race to run a good second and can improve.  Epaulette was wide all the way, and ran well.

Race 6

1st      Glencadam Gold       Tommy Berry
2nd       Permit                        Hugh Bowman
3rd       Stout Hearted           Nathan Berry

This race looked easy on paper, and that is how it turned out.  Glencadam Gold was always going to find the front, where as the other top pick in betting, Stout Hearted was always going to get back, in a race of questionable pace.  They left Glencadam Gold alone mid race, and it was goodnight nurse from there.  He wound up the pace gradually and gapped them when they turned for home.  The runs of Permit and Stout Hearted were certainly good, and they can both win races at this level with the right pace on.

Follow: The first 3 home all have ability

Race 7

1st         Sables                        Chris Reith
2nd       Peck                          Kerrin McEvoy
3rd        Blazing Dragon       Corey Brown

This race, to me, looked a lottery, with the punters again sticking with Peck.  Surely this is the last time!  Honourable Aussie led them up from O’Reilly’s Prize and Merensky Reef who was pushed three wide mid race.  When they turned for home, Honourable Aussie made a bold bid for victory and set up a break, but that was short lived.  The first 3 home began to appear down the outside with Sables having a better turn of foot than Peck andBlazing Dragon.  Full marks here to Nathan Berry on Kilauea for taking inside runs from the back of the field, to wind up fourth, and the run of Diamond Jim was not too bad making ground from well back and will be fitter next time.

Race 8

1st       Emotional Circus       Chris Reith
2nd       Miss Marx Blake        Spriggs
3rd        Lady La Douce          D Pisani

A bit of pace early whilst they tried to sort themselves out, and eventually it was Rushing To Win leading narrowly from Miss Marx.  Rushing To Win was sent out favourite, but was the first horse to capitulate when they turned for home.  In what was the win of the day, Emotional Circus got back to second last, but in the straight weaved its way into the clear and finished like a shot out of a gun.  There are more wins in store for her and possibly in better grade than this.  I would be inclined to give Rushing To Win another chance.
