Race 1 Hamilton Hotel Hcp Rest 2 Metro Wins 1400m
Good tempo here saw Woorim track along the rails and have everything to suit. The smaller fields are a bonus for horses like Woorim who normally can get well back but was close enough here with very few horses to negotiate a path through. The overall time was very good basically mirroring Melito’s run in the Winter Stakes albeit run to a different sectional pattern. Woorim was only second up having won impressively when resuming. It will continue through the Winter and can be followed but predominately only in races with smaller fields and good speed.
Race 2 Open 3 yr olds 1200m
Good speed here set the race up for a horse off the speed and Tunahog was dominant here over the latter stages making it 3 wins in succession. Each of the wins have been on different surfaces( Slow, Dead and Good) which is the sign of a good horse. Emma’s Heart was outstanding having done all the work up front before being claimed close to the line. The disappointment of the race was Princess Qualo who it seems can only win when down in the weights. Wins to date have all been at 53 kg and the 56kg today certainly had an effect.
Race 3 4yr+ Classs 6 Hcp 1200m
The race was run at moderate tempo which saw the on pacers dominate.Tightrope was too good covering the final 600 in 34.8 and the only horse to make ground in the straight was Lotseventy who finished in second place. A moderate lot nonetheless.
Race 4 Australia Post Stakes 2 yr olds 1400m
An extremely moderate bunch of 2 Yr Olds and the overall time for the race was a poor 1.23.46, about 10 lengths slower than the other 1400m races on the day. Even taking age into account, there is very little to be enthused about here. The last 600m sectional of 36.38 was pedestrian and really presented the opportunity for Swoopers to run over the top of them at the end but nothing was able to do so. Paris Blue was game from the front again. We wont be seeing any of these at future carnivals.
Race 6 Healey Stakes Group 3 1200m
There was much said about the win of Hay List. Certainly the run was meritorious however the track was playing very quick which was reflected in the times of the other 1200m races on the day. 1.08.69 was impressive but only approximately 6 lengths faster than the very moderate 2 yr olds in race 2 and the Class 6 event in race 3. Admittedly horses can only beat what is put before them but for a Group 3 event this race was thin on Quality. It will be interesting to see what McNair does now as it’s a difficult task to go from the Brisbane Carnival to the paddock then prepare for a Spring assault. The acceleration from the turn was breathtaking but comparisons to Takeover Target etc are way off the mark.
Race 7 Winter Stakes F & M Group 1 1400m
In a well thought out plan Melito was taken to the lead by Brown and was then able to get away with some relatively cheap sections before drawing away from the 200 as Beaded commenced a move along the fence. The race never looked in doubt although Wealth Princess made it interesting for approximately 100m before its run ended at the 75m mark. It seems this Kiwi Mare has a limited sprint despite being able to quicken well. Her preparation was successful and the same can be said for the game little Beaded, who reached new highs but whom had probably had enough before this race.
Race 8 Centenary Mile Listed 1600m
Firebolt didn’t miss the start this time and commenced to go to it’s usual dominant leader role. it was certainly going well and had kicked to a good lead of 3 lengths at the 200m mark however the vastly underrated Kiwi Mare Pennacchio finished off in very good fashion yet again to score a convincing win and provide Trainer Andrew Scott with his 8th winner for his trip to Queensland. This is an extremely talented Mare who now boasts an imposing record.
