This looks to be a very nice race for Muchos Respectos. His effort on Saturday behind the promising Turnitup was excellent and he was able to register the fastest 400m sectional of that race. He looks to be very well placed here back from Open to a restriced 72 and is well weighted after a handy claim for the talented Maskiell. The mile will be perfect here and he will be very hard to beat.

10.15 Moonee Valley R8 N12, Valuabelle – Minimum price: $2.50, Bet: 2.00 units
1, 11 and 15 all speed horses come out here which enhances the chances of in form Adelaide mare Valuabelle. Her form here at Moonee Valley has been sensational her last couple of runs and she goes up 1kg from her last start win here. She is very reliable out of the gates and will us barrier 1 for all it’s worth here. It’s worth noting that she is undefeated in five starts over 1200m and is two from two at Moonee Valley. Expect Rule will jump and run like she has been doing and be very hard to beat here yet again.

Our AFL analyst has a futures bet for you:

The Western Bulldogs seem to have been blessed with a favourable draw.

They only play last years top 4 teams once - Stkilda, Collingwood and
Geelong. Also only play the up and comers Carlton once.

If we look at the teams they get to play twice, they are Gold Coast, West
Coast, Essendon, Sydney and Fremantle. To even things up slightly, they
also play the Hawks twice.

With this draw, they seem to have a great chance of a top 4 finish. Whilst
still only a $2.25 chance, they seem likely to finish top 4 rather than 5th
to 8th.

Sports betting turnover in Australia has doubled in just 5 years and it’s share of the overall gambling industry is growing at an annual rate 24 times that of horse racing (12% annually versus 0.5%).

So what is it about sports betting that has fuelled this explosive growth? And with the NRL and AFL seasons starting this month what are the main reasons why this will be a record year for football betting?

(1) Easy to learn: football betting doesn’t require a form guide or to learn specialist industry terms. Pretty much any football fan can place a bet, unlike horse racing where there is a learning curve in understanding many of the terms used in a form guide and when placing a bet. We often under-estimate this because we just take this racing jargon for granted as if we have always known it, but people are easily put off by something that seems foreign or difficult so it can be a real impediment to attracting new horse racing punters.

(2) Value for money (part 1): the takeout of a normal horse racing market is 3 or 4 times as much as football or other sports bets, which means the ‘price’ of horse racing is much higher and racing punters lose at a rate 3 or 4 times faster than sports bettors.

(3) Value for money (part 2): a football game goes for 2 or 3 hours, whereas a horse race goes for just a minute or two. The casual punter who wants to have a $20 bet will often choose the ‘value’ option.

(4) Huge media exposure: people want to bet on events they can (a) watch on TV, (b) read about in the papers and (c) chat about with their mates. Football betting undoubtedly offers all three of these, whereas racing is still somewhat of a niche sport.

(5) Wide variety of options: you can bet on almost anything you like in a football game, whether it’s the first scorer, margins or myriad other options. Compare that to horse racing where, except for the advent of laying, punters are basically offered the same bet types they were 10, 20 or even 100 years ago.

(6) Every game is important : the football codes have defined seasons and just 8 to 10 games per week means that every one of those has real meaning. That is in stark contrast to horse racing which is very much a diluted product with wall-to-wall racing 363 days per year.

(7) Both teams are trying: despite the occasional controversy, the football codes have much cleaner reputations compared to horse racing, which has been tainted by the stigma of corruption for as long as there has been betting.

Sports betting will continue to grow at a fast rate for a long time yet, so it’s up to our horse racing administrators to learn from other betting industries and understand that the competition for the gambling dollar will only get tougher in the years ahead.

The Blues will be strong defensively and can clearly win this game in the final 20 minutes as they have an outstanding spine in Hayne, Barrett, Pearce and Ennis, who will be looking to exploit their left with the Dragon combination of Creagh, Cooper and try scoring freak Brett Morris. They will think they are a chance against Willie Tonga, who normally plays on the other side, and big Izzy Folau who is often caught out with his lateral defence. For this to work Pearce and Barrett will have to combine well and they only met for the first time last week and have had an interrupted preparation as Mrs Barrett dropped a future number 6 last Friday. It will be interesting to see how Barrett handles the calls as he will have to be a “part time” Dragon again.
As good as the Blues spine is, and it is vastly superior to game one, it is still not as good as the Maroons who boast arguably the best spine in the history of the game.

I cannot recall ever rating any spine with a rating of 36 out of a possible 40 points, and that is discounting Greg Inglis.

Billy Slater (9) Will be remembered alongside of Clive Churchill and Graeme Langlands.
Darren Lockyer (9) Peak rating has been 9.5 and he is a genuine “Living Legend”.
Jonathan Thurston (9.5) Could be the second best halfback ever behind Andrew Johns, and the best player in the world at present.
Cam Smith (9.5) The best hooker of all time and regarded by Craig Bellamy as the best player he has coached.

The Maroons have three tactical kickers including the advantage of Lockyer (having his last rep game in Bris) and Smith who kick left footed, and along with Thurston, will be looking to pin Hayne into his right corner pocket to minimize his left step.

It is certainly a good feeling to have a live series ticket on the Maroons at $1.90 when they are now $1.18.Members are advised that there is no right or wrong here in what to do. Clearly you can back NSW now at $4.75 to save your initial 5 unit stake or even hedge so you are in a win/win position.
It is always ideal to have these options, but the other argument is that you have just backed a $1.18 chance at $1.90 and if you continue to get huge “overs” like simple math will dictate that you will have a very big 12 months. In other words, you have got great value so stick solid and cheer the Maroons.

Monday Night NRL preview

The only reason why I have not backed South Sydney to win the Premiership is because I do not trust their little halfback Chris Sandow when a big play is required.

He will often get a blood rush and kick on tackle three, or kick out on the fall, or worse, miss a vital tackle that leads to a 12 point swing. He currently leads the NRL by as far as Robin Hood can shoot an arrow for missed tackles, but nothing has changed in 12 months.

Sandow plays behind arguably the best forward pack in the competition who give him excellent go forward and a chance to shine, but more often than not; the big play is left to the immensely talented John Sutton. Sandow and Sutton tonight are up against the world’s best half Jonathan Thurston and even if you are not a footy fan, it is a privilege to watch this master at work. He is clearly the best number 7 since Andrew Johns and will be remembered as one of the greatest of all time.

South Sydney are short priced favourites for tonight’s game but while ever Thurston is on the field with his Cowboys, Russell Crowe and his merry men from South Sydney will not be able to rest easy. I have backed the Maroons to win the State of Origin Series and would have been quiet happy if Thurston was handed a one match suspension for swearing at the ref last week enabling him to rest his troubled shoulders. Instead his legal counsel found a loop hole and he is able to play tonight.

That judicial decision has turned a one sided game into a game that could supply an upset and although Thurston and his Cowboys do not travel very well, it would be a brave man that would count them out.

The presence tonight of Thurston has caused the betting line to be reduced by 50%, he is that good, but Rugby League is a team game and the Rabbitohs are on the rise and should continue their momentum.

While Thurston may be the best player in the world, the Rabbitohs boast English International Sam Burgess, who has claims as the best go forward in the world, his combination on the right edge and big Dave Taylor on the left make South Sydney a formidable opposition for any team, including Jonathan Thurston.
